The article is so basic it hardly pertains to modern distributions anymore in that hdX and sdX often aren't directly used today but UUIDs are. Partition labels would have been nice to mention too. If you don't want to deal with UUIDs labels are the only alternative I am aware of.
Then again I am not familiar with any aspect of udev I'd call basic so maybe that is why the article chose to skip all mention of UUID?
I've personally never made extended or logical partitions as 4 primaries always seemed like enough to me. Maybe when I get an HDD larger than 8TB?
