It is not the distribution that controls this, but desktop environment and
the two main ones, KDE and Gnome, control which apps do this. All Gnome need
distros handle this the same way for example.
You can autorun an app to handle this in either Gnome or KDE.
Minimizing apps to the system tray is not the Linux way. It is Windows
behavior that is unnecessary because Linux uses multiple virtual desktops
instead. It is built into both Gnome and Kde.
