What has attacked whom? Microsoft has had at least two online FUD campaigns
levelled against Linux. It has attacked us in the courts. Threatened
companies who use it and coerced several into deals. Why shouldn't Linux
users express their dislike for their bullying behaviour and
anti-competitive practises?
Microsoft vindicated? They have been anti-competitive and continue to be.
They use their monopoly to leverage position with OEMs to their advantage.
They produce crap that most people do not want and have backed the wrong
horse on more than one occasion, Clippy, the Office Ribbon (now in Explorer,
too), Vista, CE, ME, MSX, UMPC, Zune, Xbox, Bing, Kin, Portable Media Center
(only one company backed it and only one device released - Creative Zen),
and HDDVD (was to run on the Xbox). We will be able to add Windows 7 Phone 7
and Metro to that list soon. Microsoft is rolling in money not because they
are good or produce good products. They are in business despite it because
they have a large legal department and use Mafia tactics to strong arm
competition and force protection money from them. Being right does not
matter when MS can drag things out for years and bankrupt you, so you give
in. This kills competition and innovation and is a net loss for users.
You have been watching too many Windows 7 was My Idea commercials. W7 was
forced on MS because Vista was a dud. That is the only accuracy on the
commercials. Users forced MS's hand. The things they trumpet in them are
largely stolen from OS/X and Linux. MS has stolen ideas from day one
starting with DOS. The Mac had a GUI long before the PC. It used the mouse
first, icons, and windows. Apple did not originate these ideas either. Most
ideas are recycled which is the problem with patents. MS and Apple are
patenting things they did not invent, just because they can. It is a stupid
system. Using it to say Linux is stealing MS property is ludicrous. MS makes
one file system. It will not read any other FS. As a service to Windows
users Linux makes FAT readable. We do not need FAT or NTFS because we have
our own file system.That enables MS to say we are infringing. They sued Tom
Tom for the same thing. Would it have been better if Tom Tom did not allow
Windows users to connect their devices to their Windows boxes to upgrade? It
is just sour grapes on MS's part that they cannot make a good OS that works
on small devices, so they sue which in my mind underscores their weak
position not strength. Litigation over innovation.
I would like to ignore MS, but they cannot seem to ignore me or Linux. They
started throwing sand and continue to do so. Besides they are an easy
target. There is so much to dislike and so little to like. :)
