Anyone have a link to Bill Gates' problems with Windows 8, I missed that? Looks like he wishes there was a Windows Live DVD...

Re: [nslu2-linux] Re: Need help restoring ssh access

Hello!
That should work. I've gone over similar pages concerning the same
style plug, (mine is in black.) However I'm more interested in how you
managed to get Optware to run on it.
The pages on the regular site are not completely clear on that one.
However what operating system is your laptop running? This is running
Windows Seven. Drivers do not exist for 8, but may exist for Linux and
of course for the Mac.

I normally use FTDI based adapters.

I am not sure what the point is. You can choose to use text or html email. Different strokes for different folks. Nobody is imposing one or the other on anyone.

Yep. The full email I took the screen shot took 3 printed pages
(according to print preview), the text bits INCLUDING my un-trimmed
original posting to that list would have only taken half a page, maybe
a full page if printed with full headers.

[nslu2-linux] Need help restoring ssh access

Ok, I did something really dumb last night. I have a pink Pogoplug v2 with Optware on a usb stick that's I've been using as a lan storage device for my music collection for several years. Recently I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great if I could connect to my pogoplug securely over the internet from a remote location (outside the lan) and be able to play my home music files on my remote laptop. The plan was to install sshfs on my Crunchbang laptop so that I could mount my pogoplug music folders remotely. I soon realized that the Dropbear ssh server that is native to my optware doesn't support sshfs. So I would just have to migrate to OpenSSH-server to give me the needed sshfs functionality. I installed openssh with ipkg and set it up to listen for on port 22222 (I didn't want to expose port 22 to the internet with port forwarding). I cautiously left Dropbear listening on port 22 for the time being while I verified that root and user could both ssh to the pogoplug via the new openssh server on 22222. After making sure that everything worked correctly with openssh I uninstalled Dropbear. Things were going great until I rebooted and realized my major blunder... I had forgotten to add an entry to rc.local or rcS to start the ssh daemon at boot. Ouchies! So, you guessed it, no way to ssh in, and no way to fix the problem! I pulled the usb stick and tried to find an autostart.sh or similar file that runs on boot where I could maybe add the missing "/opt/etc/init.d/S40sshd start" command, but I haven't had any luck so far.

I would greatly appreciate if someone could kindly help me to undo this mess I made! Thanks in advance for any thoughts...8-]

Ironically, all that stuff about about don't print if unnecessary is going
to add several lines to it, making it more likely that a second page will
be printed.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] How To Play DVD In Ubuntu 14.04

There is some good information here from Loyal and Scott. What I would add is that the LTS versions, which come out every two years in April and will have even year numbers and the .04 designation for April (eg. 15.04 which comes out this April will not be LTS, but 16.04 coming out next year will be LTS), have five years of support. The upgrade path is from LTS to LTS. In other words you do not have, nor should you, install the intervening releases. You can upgrade directly from 12.04 to 14.04 without installing any of the versions ending in dot ten. That reduces risk and work.

Conversely the versions ending in .10 and odd years ending in .04 have only nine months of support and you must upgrade every six months. This gives you a more cutting edge distribution, but with increased risk and workload. The choice is yours. You can switch upgrade paths once you have an LTS version installed.

The risk mentioned is not huge. It just means that at worst you may have to re-install instead of upgrade should complications arise. This is a slight risk in all upgrades in any operating system and it is rare in Ubuntu any more, but it is still a risk. You can mitigate risk by sticking with the main repositories and not installing outside packages or adding sources.

To complicate things further, Linux Mint uses a different version numbering system and in the future will only have LTS releases with Backports enabled to give six month improvements to some packages. That is a good thing, IMO, because upgrading Mint is a messy and complicated thing for newbies, compared to Ubuntu, because it offers no upgrade distribution tool.

Different users have different needs. Some prefer a slower pace and others thrive on a faster pace. Most enterprise users prefer LTS because it gives them longer support with more predictability. Both LTS and other releases are equally tested and stable. There is more change in both the distribution and for the user in the six month releases. I like the latest and greatest so I prefer the six month release upgrade path.

I would go with the premier product,  like I mentioned before probably a driver issue with .10, you probably will have less issues with 14.04 I know I have not had any issues with it and like I said tested video file and dvd movie no issues.

No, he's running the latest release, not a beta. Read more carefully. :)

Ubuntu's numbering system is year and month. 14.04 is from April, 2014,
and the latest is 14.10 from October of last year. However, 14.04 is
what's called LTS, Long Term Support, meaning it will be supported for a
few years--the ones that aren't LTS are only supported for their more
typical life cycle, not sure how long that is.

The first user created is in the sudo group. It allows you to run all
commands as if you were root.

<snip>
To each his own.  However, to call 14.10 a beta is wrong and you know that.
To recommend not running that version in favor of the 14.04.1 LTS version is
a fine idea but you said beta for 14.10.  BTW, just because an active version
is less in version number than the current release is at best delusional.  That
is how Debian Stale works.  However, unless I am wrong, Ubuntu 12.04 is
an LTS release that is still supported by Canonical.  Does that mean that the
user should use the 12.04 in lieu of 14.10 or 14.04.1?  Not at all.  If it was a work
computer and I were to use Ubuntu, I would use 14.04 because of the LTS.  For
my personal desktop I would use 14.10 without hesitation.

Loyal

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] How to Install The Latest VLC Release in Ubuntu 12.04 - OMG! Ubuntu!

You do not need to use the terminal. You can edit sources lists, install packages etc from GUI applications like Synaptic or Software Centre. Use the search function to look for the package in question instead of typing into a terminal.

Almost all things in Linux can be done in two ways, commandline or graphical. Most advice will involve the commandline because most mentors are old school, but that does not mean that it is the only way or the best way for everyone. When requesting help specify that you want graphical help.

If your computer messes up, though, sometimes the only way to fix it is through the commandline. Even, then you can often just cut and paste commands and don't really have to know what you are typing or pasting.

Are these people cry babies? Newbies may find it difficult to understand WHY
VLC requires terminal fiddling. Is there a BETTER way? If so, why not?
Several forums address the reality of VLC video issues by giving work
arounds,
and I am grateful, but wouldn`t it be a bit more productive to address
the fact that
there ARE issues in VLC as to why these issues are there? In other
words,whose job
is it to fix them in the distro before issuing the distro? Is this
dared to be questioned?
Right now, after countless hrs of messing with VLC in various distros
in various computers
(At least 10 including Dells Compaqs and AsRocks, only one has come up
issue free with
VLC. Ubuntu is free. I use the ONLY computer whichworks well in all apps
I installed
INCLUDING VLC. It`s an AsRock. I have no clue as to why I can be so
blessed as to have
ONE computer that works so well in Ubuntu.
Sigh. I pray I haven`t strained the patience of anyone to the point of
untimely departure
from this life. Shame on me if I have. Please know , I implore you. I am
grateful for the advice
i`ve received. Should I have been determined to become proficient in
terminal,perhaps
I`d have had this AsRock working so well much quicker. Woooohoooo. It
does everything I
want. Don`t ask me how. I don`t know. Burning
disks,email,browsing,forums,business,printing,
etc. I have no complaints. I will give this AsRock a hug. It works well
in 14.10 after being UPGRADED
from 14.04.1. Should we inform the programmers? Would it do any bloody good?
Oh well. Patience is my virtue. I am determined to scrap
Microshaft and go onward with
using only Mac and 64 bit Linux boxes in my business. Keep the faith. Now
I can get some work done.
Cheers
