hmm mine plays fine video file or dvd movie, I did fresh install of ubuntu 14.04 ltc not upgrade don't recall if yours is upgrade or not?

anyway below is a link to install vlc on Ubuntu 14.04,

http://www.howopensource.com/2012/10/install-vlc-in-ubuntu-12-10-12-04/

this link is to uninstall completely using gui or command line

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/completely-remove-vlc-ubuntu-38970.html

then you can run install again, are you getting errors? remember to run sudo command

You might try installing smplayer.

apt-get install smplayer

It may work when vlc fails (and I remember you mentioning you'd had bad
luck with VLC on Mint, which is usually the easiest to get working. I
would actually try on Mint first, as it's more likely to have the right
codecs.
