Re: [LINUX_Newbies] The Debian Choice...

You need to be using Debian to install Iceweasel. If you are using Ubuntu then it will say that Firefox is installed instead.

Iceweasel is NOT better than Firefox. Iceweasel is a fork of Firefox by the Debian project. They take de-branded Firefox and then change the name and slap on their own logo. It is usually older and many current add-ons may not work. IMO, you should use the real deal, Firefox, and not install Iceweasel, if you have that option. If you are using Debian then you may be stuck with Iceweasel. You can add a PPA to get Firefox in Debian, otherwise you will not be able to.

Iceweasel exists because Mozilla told Debian that they could not use the logo and make changes. Debian flipped out and started accusing Mozilla of all kinds of things because they were saying Debian was infringing on their trademark. It got nasty, mostly on Debian's part. They came up with the name of Iceweasel from the Simpsons and then had someone design the new logo which they stuck onto Firefox, which is legal because FF is open source. But because Iceweasel is a fork it is always behind the curve (older and has more compatibility issues with add-ons).
