I have used Mint as my main OS for over a year now and really like it.
As to better, that is a matter of personal opinion and choice. Mint is
based on ubuntu and new releases follow on shortly after. As has already
been stated, the main version of Mint uses Gnome but there is a KDE
version also. Apart from a few tweaks of its own and a different colour
scheme, the main difference between Mint and Ubuntu is that Mint comes
with all the main multimedia codecs installed so you are good to go for
music, video etc. "out of the box". This is a sticking point for some
purists as the codecs are not open source.
I suggest trying again to download Mint and burn it as an iso (not a
data disc) - K3B should handle it OK. Then you can try it out from the
live CD before deciding whether to keep kubuntu or switch to Mint.
