Note that "Linux" itself is to oversimplify a bit, mostly just device
drivers. On top of that, which is called a kernel, are various programs to
interact with the user, many of them written by the GNU foundation. Then
Linux distributions, such as Mint or Ubuntu, put these in a reasonably easy
to use package. So there might be a distribution with the number 4.10, but
I'd be surprised if something was calling itself Linux 4.10.
As for suggestions--start by trying to do the things you need to do, when
you run into problems with it, ask. Depending upon the distribution and
what you personally do with a computer, it may be easy or hard.
