Try f6,  that pops the cursor to the address bar and highlights all on most browsers I am using

To type a URL in the address bar you really don't have to make any changes in Firefox. Double click on the URL that is in the address bar and it will become highlighted. Then just type whatever you want.

Recently wiped XP from my netbook and installed UBUNTU.
Am finding it far more intuitive than expected, doing well considering I am pretty much an "appliance operator" when it comes to computers.
