[LINUX_Newbies] Re: reviving old laptop with Linux

Michael,

If your machine has USB 2.0, then I'd get an external CD unit--mine is by LiteOn and is excellent--and cost about $40 at a computer superstore in the U.S. when I was there last Summer.

However, if it has USB 2.0, you might just use one of the USB installers instead of bothering with a CD unit for that machine--which if everything worked would cost about $40 or $50 to buy at present, it appears.

I would also not waste the money for a Pentium 3 unless you can get one for very little cash--$5 or $10 at most.

As for distros, I'd want something very light weight--perhaps with a super-lean graphical interface such as Fluxbox or possibly LXDE.

On the positive side, most distributions should support the hardware.

You might take a look at Puppy Linux--a small distribution that should run fine on that level of hardware.

I simply wouldn't spend good money on a machine that isn't worth much on the market today--instead, I'd put that cash toward a somewhat more capable one. As fast as the market is moving, if you look around you can find a respectable machine for about $150 in a laptop--sometimes less--that would still make that one seem very antique. In your situation, I might even simply pick up a decent netbook as an alternative...they would still outperform that one, while having a very convenient form factor for mobility if that is an issue.

Either way, good luck--and please let us know what you wind up with.

David
