I do remember, a few years ago, when Dell first sold Ubuntu laptops, that
they were somewhat more expensive than similar Windows ones. At that time,
(I don't know if it's still the case), Dell would specify what wifi card
was being used--the Windows ones had Broadcom, the Ubuntu ones, Intel,
which were probably more expensive, but also easy to get working with
Linux.

At some point in time, it became nearly impossible to find out the type of
wireless card a particular laptop has. I'm fortunate, living in NYC,there
are still a few brick and mortar stores where I can (sometimes) get a
chance to view a machine.
