Firstly u try doing using command line which will help u to understand concept and working refer head first by Kathy sierra and use core editor like notepad with command prompt.
for core java i suggest u to follow above. then moving to advance use any of IDE u comfortable with. like Eclipse,Netbeans. try do u own.
