Re: [LINUX_Newbies] NEWLY INSTALLED APPLICATIONS

Synaptic is a package manager. It installs the programmes for you, but not
all programmes are GUI. Programmes without a GUI will not make a menu icon
because they are meant for the commandline. If for some strange reason you
do not get an icon then you can add one by editing the menu by right
clicking on the menu button and choosing edit menu.

Linux has no executable file types as in Windows. In fact most suffixes are
only for convenience. However, many files can be made executable by changing
its permissions. When naming files you can have as many periods as you like
and can have commas colons and many punctuation marks, except * and ? which
are wild cards as in Windows. It is a strange new world that you have
entered.

Once programmes are installed they cannot be physically located except with
superuser privileges. They are protected in the root file system where you
aren't meant to mess around unless you know what you are doing. Most
programmes can also be launched from the terminal or by pressing Alt+F2.
Usually it is just the application name without capitals. However, it is
sometimes tricky to figure out the name. Thunderbird can be thunderbird or
mozilla-thunderbird depending on the what you have installed and where you
got it from. Notice the lack of capitals. Linux is case sensitive. If you
try it with caps it won't launch the programme.

eg. Alt+F2 and type: "gimp" without the quotes and press enter will launch
the GIMP if you have it installed.

Have fun learning about Linux.
