Re: [LINUX_Newbies] CANON LBP 5000 DRIVER

You are wrong. Do not use Wine.

First check to see if it should work in Linux. Go to:
http://www.linux-drivers.org/printer_scanner.html

Most drivers in Linux come with the kernel (no drivers need to be
installed), CUPS which is usually installed by default (no separate download
of drivers, just choose from a list) and Gutenprint (sometimes installed by
default and like CUPS you just choose it from a list). So check those out at
the site above and see if your printer is supported.

If it is not supported then you can try a driver that comes with CUPS or
Gutenprint that is close. It often works. For example for the Canon lbp 5000
try a 4000 or similar. If it does not work or you are unhappy with the
results then you can try to download one from the Canon link at the above
site or use a PPD driver.

Look at this resource on how to install a printer in Ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Printers

An alternative approach uses the browser to access CUPS:
http://www.mikestechblog.com/joomla/operating-systems-section/operating-systems-ubuntu/97-how-to-add-printer-ubuntu-linux-article.html

There is also a PPA (personal package archive) that you can add to the
sources and it should give you the driver that you want:
http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/06/download-install-canon-printer-driver.html

This is more complicated but sounds promising:
http://www.unixmen.com/linux-distributions/ubuntu/229-installation-canon-lbp2900-on-linux
and this:
http://radu.cotescu.com/how-to-install-canon-lbp-printers-in-ubuntu/

For PPD: Use cups web interface (browser) and type as a url
"localhost:631". You will get the CUPS interface. Add your printer, when
prompt for ppd file, point yours. After installing cups will paste it in
/etc/cups/ppd. next you can use "lpoptions -p <printer> -l" to review your
printer specific options.

Most times things just work, then there are times like these. Good luck!

BTW, many online resources will show older versions. Unity is new so it is
unlikely that it will look the same or things be found in the same location,
ie. there is no Applications, Places, Administration menu. Functionality has
not been removed, just the look. These solutions should work, but it may
just frustrate you finding things. :)
