I use Ubuntu 11.04 on my Vista laptop by using the wubi installer that
put Ubuntu desktop inside the Windows computer and allows you a simple
boot up option to open either system . Also if you decide you do not
like it you can just remove the Ubuntu like a program from the control
panel in Windows.

If you install the Ubuntu CD in the normal way it will allow to
partition and format the whole drive removing Windows entirely. of to
just take up the free space and allow dual booting that way.
