Re: [LINUX_Newbies] ZORIN LINUX 8.1

I am not hinting at anything in the last sentence. Installation from the repositories is a cinch because all of the work is done for you and it usually does not cause any conflicts because it is tested. But compiling is another beast entirely. Linux reuses libraries while other OSes like Windows often has multiple instances and different versions of the same dependency. You can get conflicts in Linux when you install from source if all of your ducks are not in a row. The application you are compiling must use the same version of the dependencies or it will not install. You will get a dependency error or conflict message or an outright refusal to compile. You also will not get an uninstaller when you compile from source.

The better option if you can find it is to find a PPA and add the repository to your sources then you can install using the package manager. The second best option is to find a binary that is compiled by the developer and it just needs permission to download the correct dependencies. I am not saying not to use make and compile your own. I am just saying expect some frustration along the way and count your blessings when it works.

You will not get an icon or menu listing if the file is meant to be run from the terminal. You must open the terminal and issue the command to run the file. Sometimes you will not get one if you install from an outside source. In this case you can make one by editing the menu or you can just type it in the search box in the menu button or Dash in Unity. Alternatively you can press Alt+F2 in KDE and some other desktops to get a command line box. This has been disabled in some DEs like GNOME and Unity.

Well, I was just thinking of the steps I might've tried to be able to use that program perhaps.

Joan....

did some more tinkering today and got it to install. (i think)

just skipped the qmake and ran the make in terminal...it all went in and program runs, but it didn't set up the program icon and start menu entry.

progress !

am not sure what you are hinting at in your last sentence.

QSSTV was unknown to me, so I did a Google...I saw it's based on Qt like KDE. Sometimes KDE applications don't show up on Gnome or LXDE. I also saw mentioned it was offered in the Ubuntu package search. However, I generally prefer Synaptic to install my software, since talk of "make" takes me back to school and Slackware, which I never quite grasped since I had too little time with it. Perhaps it reminds me of a foreign language where some words are male or female...some applications had to be installed with make, while others were binary blobs...both concepts are confusing to me.
Do you think adding the KDE meta-package, or adding a new user for KDE like PcLinuxOS suggested I do would help?

Just Another Newbie (JAN) here with a question.

In the group looking for users of Zorin Linux.  Just put it in, and everything went quite easily.  Even networking with xp/win7 worked right out of the box.

But of course their are problems.  Trying to get QSSTV installed.  Followed all instructions from the QSSTV web page, but the "qmake" command does nothing but return to prompt in terminal window.

Anyone got Zorin out there ?
