The icon that you speak of is not to launch FF. It was likely put there when
you installed a replacement for Firefox. It sounds like you may have enabled
a repository that replaced Firefox with something else. There should be
another one. Look for Shiretoko which is the alpha of the upcoming version
of Firefox or Minefield which is the experimental branch or even Swiftweasel
which the Debian debranded version. These are the perils of trying to get
newer versions before they hit the mainstream.
