I'd like to answer that question this way: My wife noticed she was not using Windows after 6 months using Linux. One morning she asked: "what version of Windows am I using?"

> I understood that Linux is in a way a bit a simpler version of Windows, which I have noticed with the e-mail program and browser from Ubuntu. Easy to use, but with fewer options than the Windows versions.

I don't think Linux is simpler than Windows, is just different, and in my opinion, more complete and fully customizable. There are distros more "elaborated" than Windows. If you try out Sabayon Linux I'm sure you'd love it.

> I have also looked around for programs that are important to me, but most of them don't seem to run under Linux: firewall, anti-spam, anti-adware, pop-up blocker, photo-programs etc. Are there acceptable alternatives for all these programs that do run under Linux? I don't need to know the names yet, but I really can't do without any of these programs, as I use them a lot.

Linux has everything, don't worry about that.

You will learn fast, believe me. I got tired too of paying Microsoft for using a computer. I bought a brand new laptop and "jumped into the swimming pool, without knowing how to swim". I installed Linux and started using it. The computer was brand new, so there were devices that were not recognized for the system, but asking, and googleing, I made it work out. This group has helped a lot. I recommend to give Linux a try, download few LiveCD's, and try them in your computer. And if you have questions. Just ask.

Cheers
