Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Connect to MS Home Network

Thanks for the reply.
I've been attempting to access & configure samba in Mint but can't find a
GUI approach.
Googled & found a smb.conf file to save in etc using the terminal but I'm
denied permission at every attempt to either own & re-name the master or
insert the replacement.

Hi,

this may or may not apply. I have a home network using a linx server as a
data repository for several workstations. In order to get them to "see" each
other I had to create an account for each user on the linx box and also
create the user's password on the Samba server which allows connectivity
between Windows and Linux.

This means that you need to configure your machine as a Samba server and
client. A server so users can access shares on it and a client so it can
access other Windows clients.

In my distribution (SUSE 11.0) I had to manually add the user's passwords to
the using a command line tool. It wasn't enough to have created the users on
the Linux server. Look at the help paged for using SAMBA and I think it will
go into this detail. I had a book on SUSE and was able to look it up in the
chapter on using Samba.

Hope this helps.

Tony

New to Linux & have just installed Mint (Helena).

All is working well except it won't connect to my other XP PC's shared
folders on my mshome network.

Using a D-link G604T router, it shares it's internet connection on my LAN &
displays the mshome icon but gives the message:

"Unable to mount location"

"Failed to retrieve share list from server"

Any assistance much appreciated.

G.
