I have a laptop that had crashed on ubuntu Linux with gnome and would not reboot again. I managed to get that screen you just described but nothing happens when I press the buttons on the menu. Any help?

Most computers today have a boot manager. When you boot it and get the first
graphic screen, at the bottom it will tell to press a key to get the boot
manager (it might say boot options or something similar) and a different key
for recovery or BIOS. On my eeePC it is the ESC key. When I press that key
after a brief wait I get a list of the bootable devices. If my usb key is in
it might say Kingston Data Traveler or something like that. The first one on
the list will be the hard drive. You just select the one that you want from
the list with the keyboard and press enter. Just make sure that the usb key
is in the computer before you boot.

In short my 120GB Acer Aspire One netbook was running Ubuntu Netbook
Remix. I 'upgraded' to 9.10 UNR and all I get is a Black screen.
Now I have the older 9.04 version on a USB stick, but need to know how to
have the machine boot this so I can re-install it. The default is the hard
disk at present. Help **desperately*
present having agreed to sell item to a friend.
What can I do next ?
Many Thanks,
Barrie (Torquay UK)
You have to restart your computer pressing F8 and you will get into the
BIOS. In one of the BIOS menus there is an option that allows you to choose
the boot device, it is disabled by default in Acer One. Enable it. Save the
changes and exit. Plug in the USB stick and restart the computer pressing
F12. Choose to boot from USB and that's it.
