If they don't have a software library or Website to use Apt4rpm, I'd consider a more up-to-date Distro:

Barry, author of Puppy Linux uses an Acer Netbook, I think.
Many of the Linux Live CDs can be put on USB, if you don't have a USB attached CD/DVD.
