A few ideas. You might be able to update through Mint rather than
firefox--that is, run apt-get update then apt-get upgrade firefox.
Create a new user, and see if that user has the same problem. If not, it's
something corrupt in your firefox profile. If that is the case, you can
rename your $HOME/.mozilla directory to something else, though you will
have to redo your bookmarks, extensions, and such.
