I've used Puppy Linux, PcLinuxOS or Zorin Linux to read or install on suspect hard drives. It also depends on the BIOS, etc. of computer hardware make-up of each computer. I've taken both DVD or hard drives from one that had trouble to another and had years of service from it. Of course, I haven't had as much testing with the newer SATA devices than IDE/PATA devices.
