Re: [LINUX_Newbies] MINIMIZING APPLICATIONS WITHOUT CLOSING

The good news is that you are willing to try something new, Linux. The bad
news is that you expect the new OS to be like the old. It is NOT Windows.
Windows is Windows and Linux is Linux. They are not the same. If you stick
to thinking like a Windows user you will have a hard transition. Forget what
you know about Windows.

Windows has one desktop and everything can be minimized to the system tray,
but Linux does not need to because it supports virtual desktops. You can
have as many as you want. You just flip to a new desktop instead of
minimizing.

However, if you insist on being a Windows user in Linux, you are not alone.
There are a couple utilities in the repositories for people like you. All
Tray is one. It is not like in Windows, but it is the best that we can do.
You run All Tray and click on the all tray icon in the system tray before
you minimize.

Virtual desktops are a way of spreading your work around. You can have as
many as you want. Most people use four which is the default. You can add
virtual desktops by right clicking on the workspace switcher on the panel
and choosing Preferences. You switch between them by clicking on a new box
in the Workplace Switcher or if you use Compiz by rotating your cube with
the mouse wheel.

Sorry if I sound abrasive, but this is something that particularly rubs long
time Linux users like me the wrong way. What you lose in Windows you gain in
Linux. There are many trade offs that you will have to make. Expect more
from Linux, not less. More security, more flexibility, more choice, etc. You
just have to embrace a new paradigm to discover it.
