Why? Does VLC work in terminal too? Hrrm, let's try....
Well, running it from xterm gives a whole lot of stuff in the terminal,
looks like the compile time options, and little gtk thingie opened up.
Obviously, you had reasons. (On the other hand, you younger folks might
have reasons having to do with audio quality that would go over my
head--or at least over my ears.)

CentOS, which as we know, is stodgier than many other distributions,
offers it, so I would assume all of them do.
