[LINUX_Newbies] Re: Why set up DOS? Was: Wont boot..help

I've got to agree with Chris on this one, why a DOS partition?

There are actually several methods to get into a computer with forgotten/lost/changed root password:

Option 1.
Boot the system into single user mode. At the boot prompt (how you get this depends upon the boot loader used) type:

linux single

This gets you in as root with no password. Set a new password using the passwd command then sync & reboot the system.

Option 2.
Another option is to boot off a floppy or cd, mount your original root directory and edit the file /etc/shadow (from your original install of course). Open the file in your preferred editor, find the line that starts:

root:

Change the line to read:

root::::

yes, that's four colons, nothing else. Depending upon your distro you may also need to edit the file /etc/passwd. This file looks a lot like the last one but all you do is delete the 'x' that is between the first 2 colons.

Save the file/s, reboot the system and you should be able login as root without a password. Set a new password as normal.

No need for DOS to save you. :)

Cheers,
Mark K.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Wont boot..help

I've decided to download Fedora, Arch and Debian.

I'll leave Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on as my primary OS for the moment, just because
it's familiar. I'm adding a partition for Debian and a partition for Arch.
If I give each OS 50 Gigs, that will still leave me 150G for my data
partition. Then, I'll run Fedora from the live CD to see if I like it.

My goal is to become familiar and comfortable in as many Linux Distros as
possible. I've used Puppy and DSL on an older machine. I also used Mint for
a while on one of my kids' machines, but I didn't like it and went back to
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Part of this distro exploration came about because I downloaded the most
recent version of Ubuntu yesterday as part of my computer restore efforts. I
figured since I had to re- install anyway I'd update to the newest version.
I *hate* it. I'm too attached to my standard 10 work spaces and the ability
to pin short cuts to the top and bottom panel. I hated that side scroll
thing. It was in the way, and hard to get to when my desktop was filled with
windows. So, I re-installed the 10.04 LTS and decided to try a new OS or
two.

I'm curious how giving a partition to DOS provides an advantage over
another linux install or a live cd? Primary partitions are fairly
valuable if you are multibooting with windows, right? Thanks for any

Hmm. that's not a bad idea. Set up the DOS partition and then I can go in
through there if things go wonky. Thanks for the idea.

[LINUX_Newbies] Re: New to group with QUESTION

And I think that's a good place to end this one....

Moderation on this group is very limited, mainly to new members and those whom deliberately spam the group, usually after a couple of 'real' posts to get of newcomer moderation.

Generally, this has seemed to work quite well and the list just gets on with what needs to be done and has done so for the last dozen years (oh christ, has it really been that long!).

But then there is, very occasionally, a topic such as this where peoples egos seem to get in the way of constructive thoughts (you all know the thing - I know I'm right & even iof I'm wrong I won't admit it).

So we will leave all the off topic discussion about what is & isn't a peripheral and whom knows more than whom and just move on ok? I'm sure none of those involved really want anyone to find themselves back on the 'MODERATED POST' list.

Cheers,

I'm not sure how the latest Ubuntu's unity works, but as you guessed,
you open the terminal application.

So....there you are at a command prompt. Now, typing kismet was a good
idea, and might have opened it. Unfortunately, apparently it didn't.
Many programs have some documents.

Ahhh, even though this is for Ubuntu 7.04, it will probably work.

I believe Ubuntu disallows direct root login by default try su root or just sudo

For real fun figure out how to deal with visudo that way your regular user can have some more privileges by default. Means you'd have to su or sudo less. Although the sudo package is optional itself so you may have to install it.
