I would add that Unstable is a misnomer. It does not really mean unstable in the sense that you can expect crashes and things not to work. It is comparatively unstable. Debian is tested for a couple of years before it gets the stable moniker. I have used Siduction and other "unstable" Debian releases without a problem. Ubuntu is built on it and nobody would call it unstable, except maybe Debian fans.
I would try a different desktop environment on your Siduction installation (install from your package manager). try XFCE or KDE. If shutdown works then re-install GNOME completely. Neither of these things means re-installing the distro. It is all done from Synaptic or whatever you are using without leaving the desktop environment. This is why it is good to have two DEs installed. If one misbehaves just logout and switch to fix the other.
