Looking back now, I dont see 32 bit anywhere on any Java downloads, I see 86 or 64.

Already in step one, typing
tar -xvzf Downloads/JRE-7u55-Linux-x64.tar.gz
I get tar -xvzf : command not found
I think, as you mentioned before, the 64 bit may be the problem.
That machine I am testing Linux on is an old PC.
Maybe this is not going to work?
