Thanks for getting me thinking about this...  I'd like to take a spare MOTO V360 flip phone, and see if I can install Damn Small Linux 3.3 + the Ratpoison window manager.  (I've seen MS-DOS set up on the V360 before, so I am sure it can be done!).
 
BTW, Jerry, try out Joe's Window Manager for an absolutely minimal experience that allows you to 'minimize' stuff to a bar at the bottom of the screen.  Damn Small Linux is bundled with both Fluxbox and JWM, and you can choose either X-window.

I agree with your sentiments about developer decisions, but they are not
thinking about our type of user. They are thinking about people with smaller
screens, touch screens and people used to smart phones which is the growing
demographic. My type (and yours) is shrinking. :(
