Unity uses Compiz for its window manager/ compositor. It is likely your
problem. You need a 3D card and a 3D driver. If it is not working then you
likely have classic GNOME instead working. If you have a 3D card then you
likely need a 3D driver from Additional drivers in System, Administration.
If there is no driver then you are likely out of luck for now or have to
find a driver on your own which is not for the faint of heart. The next
release will default to Unity 2D which is an alternative for people without
3D support. You can install it now and it works just like Unity. It uses
Metacity (like classic GNOME) instead of Compiz, but it moves away from
GNOME in that it does not use GTK. It is written in QT (like KDE) and QML.
