First, no one has mentioned that you should have a second partition for swap space. On a system with only a single gig of RAM installed, I suggest making swap two gigabytes. It is used when your applications might require more memory than you have RAM -- just as Windows has a swap file, only Linux uses a separate partition for that task.
Next, twenty gigs is enough for most folks so long as you don't get heavily into multimedia manipulation in Linux. However, storing and viewing video files can be done on your Windows partition--Linux will read and write to that one quite well.
Personally, I would adjust partition size later using the Gnu Partition Editor--however, it would be far better to allocate the space you will need later from the beginning if that is possible.
Finally, as with any time you are changing size on a Windows partition, you should scavenge the disk first--doing a thorough "defrag" to get the files as contiguous as possible.
Enjoy!
