Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Emachines D 3315 full with Freespire Linx Xp

If you want it more like Windows, try Kubuntu which uses KDE and is a fuller
desktop experience more like Windows 7 than XP. Ubuntu is the one that most
people go to but it is becoming a Mac wannabe. There is also Mint which is
also GNOME, although you can get a KDE version from time to time. Other big
KDE distros are Mandriva, PCLinuxOS and SimplyMEPIS. OpenSuSE has a KDE
version as does Fedora. But in my experience the easiest KDE distros are
PCLOS, Kubuntu and MEPIS. Kubuntu has the most support and the biggest
repositories (most apps), so it would be a good starting place.

However, do not overlook GNOME distros which can be a very easy introduction
to Linux. Mint would top the list, but Ubuntu is on par and since Mint is
based on Ubuntu and the most people use it then, it is worth a look. I am
not recommending it first because it is in for major change with the next
release, but other GNOME distros will have to come to terms with GNOME 3
sooner or later (due out in the Spring). Mint is trying to stall but they
can't do that forever. If you go GNOME then you should know this up front.
What you get now will disappear in the future and be replaced by GNOME 3
which is a very different desktop environment and will take some getting
used to.
