Well, if you've never installed or used Ubuntu 10.10 before then I would recommend using the Wubi installer. It allows you to dual boot Windows and Linux on the same machine without altering your existing Windows partition configuration.
If you decide to install Ubuntu full blown (Wubi gives a maximum 30gb partition I believe) after testing out Ubuntu through Wuibui, then you can simply remove Ubuntu via the Add/Remove applet in the Control Panel and then proceed with a full installation as a regular OS.
You should check the Ubuntu web site for specific details on the procedure to be certain it runs smoothly for you.
As a security measure, make sure to perform a full backup of any data you want to keep prior to performing any installation.

Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] Dual boot question
I have a toughbook CF 29 with a 500GB harddrive and 1 GB of RAM. I have
Windows XP Pro w/SP3 installed. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 and dual boot
the system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
